Significance
In its time, Ghana was in the center of the Saharan trade route. It was also one of the main gold providers and one of the first empires in North Western Africa to thrive. Most of Ghana's cities were established as a result of trade, and they all saw many people from far away places.Ghana slowly began to decline when gold was found in other empires and other regions. Trade routes changed and the empire struggled to maintain the status it once had as a main provider of gold. Eventually, the empire was wiped out in 1235. Ghana had a long time to prosperity, it was looked up to by most other African empires and respected by all of them.
Many people believe that Ghana today is the same as Ancient Ghana, when in reality the current country just took the name from the old empire.
