Geography
Despite its name, the old Empire of Ghana is not in any way, related to modern Ghana. It lies about four hundred miles north west of modern Ghana. Ancient Ghana is now located in a region within modern day Mali and Mauritania. Ghana was located in the savanna region, north of rain forests where there was an abundance minerals, specifically gold. Vegetation grew almost exclusively in the southwest part of the kingdom, due to the lack of rain in the northern part of the empire.
